Dorrance Dance is an award-winning tap dance company whose uniquely talented dancers and musicians deliver innovative, powerful performances at every show. The company’s work aims to honor tap dance’s beautiful history in a new, dynamic and compelling context; not by stripping the form of its tradition, but by pushing it—rhythmically, technically and conceptually. The company’s inaugural performance garnered a Bessie Award for “blasting open our notions of tap,” and the company continues its passionate commitment to expanding the audience of tap dance, America’s original art form.

Founded in 2011 by artistic director and 2015 MacArthur Fellow Michelle Dorrance, Dorrance Dance has received countless accolades and rave reviews. The company has performed for packed houses at venues and events that include The Joyce Theater in New York City, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in Becket, Massachusetts, the New York City Center, Carolina Performing Arts in Chapel Hill, Vail International Dance Festival, and the Kennedy Center, among many others. The company has also performed at many colleges and universities across the United States and at international venues in Canada, France, Germany, Spain, England, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Dorrance Dance is currently touring its repertory nationally and internationally while continuing to create and rehearse new works in its New York City home and through additional creative residency opportunities. The company is dedicated to expanding its programs to help shape and educate the next generation of tap dancers and has partnered with Nicholas Van Young’s Institute for the Rhythmic Arts, Get Empowered!, and 92Y Harkness Dance Center and Dance Education Laboratory (DEL), among other educational initiatives.
